Black Lives Matter Discourse

In 2017, Milagros Castillo-Montoya and Joshua Abreu published a paper entitled "What a Discourse Analysis of the Black Lives Matter Movement Can Tell Us About Teaching at Predominantly White Institutions." The paper was published in the symposium Making Black Lives Matter: Transforming Pedagogy and Curriculum at Traditionally White Institutions. The paper is to be presented at the American Educational Research Association Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

Careers for the Common Good

Emily Daher, HESA '18 has done significant community work, and she was spotlighted in The Daily Campus newspaper. The article, Public Service Career Fair Attracts Caring Students, interviewed Daher, the graduate assistant for Careers for the Common Good, who mentioned that the fair attracted 80 organizations in 2017.

College Union Facilities and Organizations

Lexy Parrill '17 presented initial reseults of an inquiry project she has been working on with colleague Mara Dahlgren (Indiana University-Bloomington) in spring 2017. The project aims to create a timeline of college union facilities and organizations founding dates, renovations, services, and naming practices. During the presentation, Lexy and Mara identified trends and described how this information could be relevant to future practice.

Designing Interview Protocols

Milagros Castillo-Montoya published an article, Preparing for Interview Research: The Interview Protocol Refinement Framework, which was on designing interview protocols, to the journal The Qualitative Report, volume 21, issue 5.

Diverse First-Generation College Students

In 2016, Milagros Castillo-Montoya published a paper in Teaching in Higher Education entitled "Deepening Understanding of Prior Knowledge: What diverse first-generation college students in the U.S. can teach us. The article is available here.

Latin@s in STEM at the Intersections

Blanca Rincon along with T.B. Lane got their manuscript, Latin@s in STEM at the Intersections accepted with the Journal of Equity and Excellence in Education in October 2016.

Blanca Rincon, along with T.B. Lane, R.A. Revelo, and K. Morgan published a cahpter, Addressing Multiculturalism in STEM: An Analysis of Theories that Inform Our Research, in Multicultural Education in the 21st Century: Innovative Research and Practices.

Strategic Integration in Service Learning

Garret Zastoupil '17 co-authored an article in 2016 alongside R. Fuller, J. McGary, and J. Evanovich, Strategic Integration of Faculty Researcher Roles: Valuable Lessons from Participant Action Research as Part of Service Learning Courses Impacting Students and Social Change.

STEM Intervention Programs

Blanca Rincón, along with C.E. George-Jackson, published an article about STEM intervention programs, STEM Intervention Programs: Funding Practices and Challenges, to the journal Studies in Higher Education, volume 41, issue 3.

Teaching and Diversity in Higher Education

Milagros Castillo-Montoya published a chapter on teaching and diversity in higher education, Pursuing Equity through Diversity: Perspectives and Propositions for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in 2016, co-written with L. Bolitzer and L. Williams. The chapter appears in Race, Equity, and Higher Education: The Continued Search for Critical and Inclusive Pedagogies around the Globe.

Culturally-Sustaining Teaching in Community Colleges

Milagros Castillo-Montoya, Joshua Abreu, and K. Kortz published a paper, Community college English instructors' perceptions on learning and enacting culturally-sustaining teaching methods in April 2017. The research paper is to be presented at roundtable session at the American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
